Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Wednesday asked the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to jointly move the Supreme Court seeking directions to the Union Government to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate all the cases of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

During the day, accompanied by his son Sukhbir Singh Badal, Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leaders, Mr. Badal had gone to Jantar Mantar where he made riots victim Nirpreet Kaur end her six-day fast. Ms. Kaur was on a fast to protest against the acquittal of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar by a Sessions court here this past week.

The Akali Dal leaders also met President Pranab Mukherjee and sought his intervention in directing the Union Government for filing a fresh appeal against Sajjan Kumar and expediting the investigation against Jagdish Tytler.

The leaders also called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and presented a memorandum demanding expeditious and exemplary punishment for all those responsible for the 1984 massacre.

A number of opposition leaders also accompanied the Akali delegation that met the President. The SAD said it would continue to fight for justice for the 1984 riots victims.
