One person was killed when the mother elephant attacked him
A two-month-old baby elephant which strayed from its herd and fell into a water tank was rescued by wildlife officials after a five-hour battle in Barjora in the State’s Bankura district on Friday.
One person was killed after the mother of the baby elephant tossed him in the air when a group of curious villagers went close to the tank located in a nursery for seedlings.
“The elephant calf scrambled out of the tank after rescue workers broke down portions of the cemented parapet. Before going anywhere close to the tank we had to tranquillise the mother who had turned ferocious after her efforts to rescue her baby proved futile,” Kulandaivel, Divisional Forest Officer, Bankura told The Hindu here.
“The elephant calf was attracted to the clean water in the tank and, in a playful mood, fell into it round 5 a.m. It took us five hours to rescue it,” he said. Fire service officials gave a hand while the local police kept at bay the villagers gathered there.
