As four parties are to fight it out in the June 27 Rajya Sabha elections for six seats from Tamil Nadu, DMK Parliamentary Party leader T.R. Baalu met Congress president Sonia Gandhi here on Wednesday and reportedly sought her party’s support for Kanimozhi, who is seeking re-election as DMK candidate.
However, Ms. Gandhi was non-committal and told Mr. Baalu that the Congress, which has five MLAs in the Assembly, would decide on whom to support at the appropriate time.
Informed sources in the Congress said the party had reservations about backing Ms. Kanimozhi as she was yet to come clean in the 2G spectrum allocation scam case. Furthermore, the DMK leaders, including its treasurer M.K. Stalin, were attacking the Congress and the UPA government over several issues, especially Sri Lankan Tamils issue.
The sources pointed out that while the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam, led by actor-politician Vijaykanth, wasted no time in approaching the Congress for support for its candidate A.R. Elangovan, even deputing a delegation of five MLAs to senior Congress leaders, the DMK approached the party only at the last minute, after requesting the CPI(M) and others for support.
