She was found unconscious along National Highway 52

The Assam government on Wednesday formed a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the murder of a woman after an alleged rape in Lakhimpur district.

The victim’s family lodged a First Information Report with the Boginadi police station, alleging kidnapping, rape and murder of the woman after she died of her injuries on November 23. The police have so far taken two persons into custody.

Home Secretary G.D. Tripathi told The Hindu that the post-mortem report established that the woman died of “head injuries caused by strokes by blunt objects” and that “no penetrative assault” on the victim had taken place.

According to the police, the woman was found unconscious and in a critical condition along National Highway 52.

She was first admitted to the Lakhimpur Civil Hospital on November 22 and the same night she was referred to the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). However, her family members admitted her in a private hospital. The next day, she died.

Locals said the woman, on her way to bringing her daughter back from school, was raped by four persons in a moving tempo who dumped her on the roadside.
