The Assam Police on Monday night rescued National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) General Manager Anil Kumar Agarwala from the militant group National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Songbijit) after 51 days of captivity in a jungle near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border.
There was an exchange of fire between the police assault team led by Sonitpur Superintendent of Police Arabinda Kalita and the militants after the police rescue team succeeded in isolating Mr. Agarwala from his captors. Police said they used a coded message from which Mr. Agarwala could realise that he was being rescued by the police.
Six policemen, including the Sonitpur SP and Additional Superintendent of Police Shiladitya Chetia, sustained splinter injuries when the militants lobbed grenades at the police team. Two policemen who sustained serious injuries have been shifted to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital.
