When news came that she had stood first in the State in the II pre-university examination in the Arts stream, Israr Banu Mansoorsab Bellary could not control her emotions.

The second daughter of Mansoorsab Bellary, a DTP operator at a small publication house in Gadag, Israr Banu never had enough resources to buy books and stationery required for her studies.

Israr, a student of Hulkoti Cooperative Education Society's PU College in Gadag, was pleasantly surprised when one of her teachers messaged her about the result.

Mansoorsab, a postgraduate in History, could not get a job that matched his educational qualification.

Mr. Mansoorsab stays with his family in a small house at Rajiv Gandhi Nagar in Gadag.

There were days when neighbours ridiculed Mr. Mansoorsab for his decision to send his children to school. “Now, they shower praise on me and my daughter on her achievement”. Out of 600 marks, Israr Banu scored 572 with 99 in History, 98 in Political Science, 95 in Education and Sociology, 97 in Kannada and 88 in Hindi.

Israr owes her achievement to her father, mother Mehrunnisa, who didn't let her do any household chore, and her teachers who encouraged her. She plans to study either for the Karnataka Administrative Service after graduation or pursue postgraduation in History and become a lecturer.
