NEW DELHI: The former Foreign Secretary, Shiv Shankar Menon, on Saturday took over as National Security Adviser in the place of M.K. Narayanan, who has been named Governor of West Bengal. Mr. Menon, the fourth NSA, will have the rank of Minister of State, the same as his predecessor.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh hosted a farewell lunch for Mr. Narayanan. It was attended by senior ministers including Pranab Mukherjee (Finance), P. Chidambaram (Home) and A.K. Antony (Defence).

Dr. Singh lauded Mr. Narayanan’s contribution to the India-U.S. nuclear deal and hailed him as one of the “finest civil servants.”
