The Cyber Cell of the Pune police has arrested 38-year-old Ahmed Bashir Siddiqui for allegedly uploading a doctored video on YouTube, which led to attacks on students from the north-east here last month. The police said Siddiqui was a school teacher and a resident of Malad in Mumbai.

DCP (Cyber Cell) Sanjay Shinde and ACP Sangita Shinde said Siddiqui uploaded the hate video named ‘Burma Riots-Thrilling Pictures 2012’ on YouTube. Police believe that the video, believed to showcase atrocities against Muslims in Assam, provoked attackers in Pune and Mumbai. Many students from the north-east had to leave the city in fear.

“Siddiqui was hiding in Pune when he was arrested on Wednesday night,” Mr. Shinde stated. “The investigators are now looking at who made and circulated the original clip. It is not known whether Siddiqui himself doctored it.”

Siddiqui, who teaches science at a local school, told the investigators he received the video clip on his phone. Investigation revealed that he had uploaded the video from his home computer.
