Pondicherry University has proposed to start a School of International Studies, Vice-Chancellor J.A.K. Tareen said here on Friday.

The school would encompass Centres for European Studies, Canadian Studies, American Studies, South Asian Studies and others, he said speaking at a National Seminar on Euro Crisis – Implications for India .

In the 12{+t}{+h}Plan, the university plans to enhance its networking - both internetworking and intranetworking - through study groups and conferences.

It also plans to have an average of 20 to 25 overseas professors at the university on any given day of the year and provide education to around 400 overseas students, he said.

Delivering keynote address, Pami Dua, professor, Delhi School of Economics, said India’s export dependence on the European Union was likely to affect the leather, iron and steel, low skill manufacturing sector and IT exports.Depreciation of rupee would make goods and services cheaper, but because India depends on fuel imports, there would be rise in fuel prices which might spur inflation, she said.

Policy makers need to pay urgent attention to the increasing current account deficit, dwindling foreign exchange reserves and high external and fiscal deficits, she said.
