Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activist N. Sachin Gopal, 21, who had been allegedly stabbed by Campus Front and Popular Front of India (PFI) activists near Pallikkunnu on July 6, died at the Kasturba Medical College Hospital at Manipal near Mangalore on Wednesday evening, according to information reaching here.

Sachin Gopal, a district functionary of the ABVP, had been admitted to the hospital after he suffered serious stab injuries in his abdomen in an attack near the school on July 6. Son of Gopal, an autorickshaw driver and resident of Kottali near here, Sachin succumbed to his injuries around 6 p.m., Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sources said here.

Sachin, an ABVP Nagar Samithi member, had come under attack when he reached the Pallikkunnu High School here for membership campaigning. Three Campus Front/PFI activists had been arrested in connection with the attack. The case is being investigated by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted by District Police Chief Rahul R. Nair.

The Hindu Aikya Vedi had staged a protest march here a few days ago alleging that the police were not trying to nab the culprits. The ABVP had also represented to Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, alleging that the police probe was not satisfactory. The SIT was formed in response to the demand.

The SIT comprises police officers who investigated the murder of Indian Union Muslim League leader Abdul Shukkoor at Keezhara near Kannapuram on February 20 last. The police had already registered a case of attempted murder against Campus Front/PFI activists. Deputy Superintendent of Police P. Sukumaran, who heads the special team, said that the team members had held a meeting on September 4 to speed up the investigation.
