One person has been arrested and remanded in police custody till August 27 on the charge of being involved in the gangrape of a 22-year-old woman here.
Residents of the posh Golf Garden informed the Jadavpur Police station that a woman was raped by a group of youths in the area late on Friday evening. The victim was whisked off by the youths to a construction site. She was rescued when locals heard her screams. The youths managed to flee the spot.
The woman was admitted to the government-run M.R. Bangur Hospital, and later shifted to the Calcutta National Medical College.
Earlier on Saturday, police recorded the victim’s statement, and sent her clothes for forensic examination. A medical test has also been conducted, and its report is awaited.
A team of officers of the local police station visited the spot and collected necessary evidence.
Meanwhile, family members of the youth, Sharif Ali Mollah, who was arrested late on Friday, claimed that the accused and the victim were known to each other and the allegations were fabricated.
