NEW DELHI: Congress president Sonia Gandhi has suggested setting up of screening committees at the State level that would recommend a panel of names for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. This would particularly be of help in the constituencies where there is no consensus on the selection of candidates.
Asking the party to gear up for the general elections, Ms.Gandhi also asked for setting up Pradesh election committees at the earliest. She was addressing a meeting of the party general secretaries and Congress Working Committee (CWC) members in-charge of States here on Saturday.
Ms. Gandhi suggested that the panel should have at least three names and said the first list of names should be submitted by January 31.
Parliamentary elections are scheduled to be held anytime before May.
Importantly, Ms. Gandhi asked State units to refrain from sending a single line resolution at the legislative party meeting authorising her to choose the candidates including leaders of the State assemblies. State units should have a greater say in deciding on the candidates.
