The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has claimed that the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has squandered a golden opportunity that came in the form of the just-concluded by-elections to retain people's confidence.

CPI(M) State secretary B.V. Raghavulu said corruption was one among the combination of various issues that dictated the by-poll outcomes. The TDP, being the main Opposition, should have benefited in the normal course.

“But the TDP's political opportunism, in so far as the demand for separate Telangana is concerned, and its failure to capitalise on the anti-incumbency harping just on corruption of Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, has done the party in,” he said at party's State secretariat meeting on Saturday.

Mr. Raghavulu faulted the parties for focussing on Mr. Jaganmohan Reddy's alleged corruption claiming it was not proper to isolate the YSR Congress chief at a time when all mainstream parties were full of corrupt elements. “The government should come clear on whether it will drop the five Ministers named and 26 controversial GOs issued if the Congress wants to prove that it is not selective in dealing with corruption,” he said.
