Congress candidate M. Venkatramana sobs at the press conference in Tirupati on Saturday.

Former MLA and Congress candidate for the Tirupati Assembly seat for the by-election M. Venkatramana squarely blamed it on backstabbers for his defeat at the hands of the YSR Congress Party candidate Bhumana Karunakar Reddy.

‘Humiliating'

While taking the defeat in his stride, Mr. Venkatramana, who was in tears, said he could have accepted a smaller figure, but not the margin of 17,000 plus votes, which he felt was ‘humiliating'.

Thanks all

Addressing a media conference here on Saturday, Mr. Venkatramana initially thanked all those who had voted for him and also those who had not.

‘Know who is behind'

The former MLA claimed that he knew who were behind his defeat, as his fellow party leaders and activists did, but would not make any complaint against them to the Congress high command.

Admitting that sentiment had prevailed over his development agenda, Mr. Venkatramana lamented that his accessibility to his constituents and the scores of works done by him could not come to his rescue.

To work for people

Irrespective of his poll prospects, Mr. Venkatramana said he would use his good offices with Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy to fulfil the promises made by him to his constituents, he said.
