Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Khazhagam general secretary Vaiko on Thursday urged the State government to reduce the value added tax imposed on petrol.

Condemning the steepest-ever petrol price hike, Mr. Vaiko said that under the pretext of rupee depreciation, the Union government had effected it. This was tantamount to daylight robbery.

He attributed that the UPA's economic policy, and inflation were factors for the fall of rupee.

The price hike would have a cascading effect on other essential commodities' price and the union government had failed to appreciate that this would impose a huge burden on people. The hike would hugely affect the middle class people, who use two wheelers, and the downtrodden who drive autorickshaws.

Shocking

Terming it shocking, the Manithaneya Makkal Katchi also condemned the petrol price hike and said it could not be justified in any manner.
