Even as the fire continued to rage in a portion of Sri Lakshmi Vallabha cold storage at Madhira on Monday, the Fire and Emergency Services Department pressed into action the sophisticated Bronto Sky lift to extinguish the fire.
The major fire, that broke out in the cold storage on Saturday night, destroyed huge stocks of chilli belonging to farmers causing loss to the tune of Rs. 25 crore.
Undeterred by the loss of their fellow fireman while on duty during the fire fighting operation on Sunday, the Fire Department personnel fought the blaze that posed a threat to an adjoining cold storage unit on Monday.
Armed with modern fire-fighting devices, the firemen struggled to douse the fire. They sprayed water on the smouldering chambers of the cold storage with the aid of Sky lift.
Director General of Fire and Emergency Services Department Vivek Dubey monitored the operation.
Farmers disputed the contention of the staff of the cold storage that short circuit led to the fire and suspected foul play.
“We have been putting in consistent efforts to completely extinguish the fire and prevent further damage,” said Sridhar Reddy, District Fire Officer. Speaking to The Hindu , he said a total of 15 fire tenders have been working round-the-clock to put out the fire. Bronto Sky lift has been deployed to spray water into the smouldering chambers of the building from an elevated platform, he said.
