NEW DELHI: Salim Sherwani, a Congressman who left the party to join the Samajwadi Party in the wake of the Babri Masjid demolition, returned to the Congress on Thursday and described it as a “homecoming.”

His return to a party that his family has been associated with since the freedom struggle comes after the Samajwadi Party denied him a ticket from Badaun in Uttar Pradesh.

At the party’s official briefing, Mr. Sherwani had to face a bevy of questions on whether he had returned only in search of greener pastures after being shown the door by the Samajwadi Party.

“I am a political person and I cannot sit at home,” was his response. However, he was non-committal on whether the Congress had promised him a ticket; stating that it was for the party to decide.
