MUMBAI: The polling staff in the country will now have to mark the right hand index fingers of voters with an indelible ink line, instead of just dots.

The change comes into effect after February 1.

Voters will go home from the booth with a vertical line, beginning from the nail tip to the finger's first joint, according to Chief Election Officer of Maharashtra, U.P.S. Madan.

Mr. Madan said the removal of such a long black line would be "relatively" more difficult. "But some of the women voters may not like the change, for the line could spoil their nail polish," he quipped.

The change would be seen in Maharashtra, on February 16, when two Assembly constituencies, Shrivardhan and Naigaum go to the polls.
