CHENNAI: The Samajwadi Party has won the Uttar Pradesh Assembly by-election to Karoram (Gorakhpur district) constituency held on Tuesday. This victory, and the consequent defeat of the Congress "reveals how hollow the media hype is about Ms. Sonia Gandhi's popularity," the Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy has said.

In a statement here on Wednesday, he said that just a few days after Ms. Gandhi resigned from parliament, her party candidate in that constituency not only lost his deposit, but ended fifth, receiving less than 1000 votes.

"The Congress has been losing in all by- elections in U.P. since May 2004, losing deposits in most of them. I therefore support Ms. Uma Bharati's call to make the coming Rae Bareli Lok Sabha by-election a decisive defeat for Ms. Gandhi by putting up a united Opposition candidate," Dr. Swamy added.
