"Jayalalithaa's statement reveals her pathological hatred for Sonia Gandhi"

CHENNAI: Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram has contrasted the conduct of Congress president Sonia Gandhi and the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and said Ms. Gandhi "instead of taking a litigious course [a la Ms. Jayalalithaa], took the politically correct position of resigning from the two offices and announcing her intention to go back to the people of her constituency."

He said: "The people of India are the final judges. When the verdict from Rae Bareili is returned, the hollowness of Ms. Jayalalithaa's criticism will be exposed." Though there was a difference of opinion on what was an "office of profit," Ms. Gandhi had taken the politically correct position.

Responding to Ms. Jayalalithaa's criticism of Ms. Gandhi's decision, Mr. Chidambaram said: "Of all the statements issued by political leaders on the resignation of Ms. Gandhi, the one made by Ms. Jayalalithaa is the most extraordinary, and reveals her pathological hatred for Ms. Gandhi."

He said: "Let me recall a chapter from the past: Ms. Jayalalithaa filed her nomination from four constituencies in the Assembly elections in 2001. All the nominations were rejected by the Returning Officers. She did not challenge the rejection either before or after the elections. Yet, she simply got herself elected as leader of the AIADMK Legislature Party and persuaded the Governor to swear her in as Chief Minister. It was perhaps the most brazen violation of the Constitution in recent history. It required a judgment of the Supreme Court to remove her from the office of Chief Minister."
