CHENNAI: The Andnaman and Nicobar Coast Guard apprehended 14 poachers from the Northern Group of Islands on Wednesday.
A Coast Guard ship sighted a suspicious dinghy 12 nautical miles west of Interview Island. The boat, on seeing the Coast Guard ship, tried to speed away. However, all the 14 Myanmarese poachers were apprehended.
The poachers had come to the Andaman Islands to collect sea cucumbers, Coast Guard officials said. The boat had diving equipment, diesel and ration for many days. The boat was towed to the nearest port at Diglipur, and the poachers were handed over to the local police.
In another incident, a Coast Guard helicopter on Thursday rescued five fishermen stranded in a remote location on the Little Andaman Island.
The helicopter, on a routine surveillance mission, sighted the fishermen. Their boat engine had failed and they had run out of rations.
Two fishermen, who required medical attention, were airlifted to their village at V.K. Pur, near Hutbay.
As the others did not want to leave their boat, food and water was supplied to them during a subsequent sortie.
