17 new and re-elected members take oath of office

NEW DELHI: Seventeen new/re-elected Rajya Sabha members, including Deputy Chairman K. Rehman Khan, Law Minister H.R. Bhardwaj and the former Lok Sabha Speaker, Manohar Joshi, were sworn in on Wednesday.

Chairman Bhairon Singh Shekhawat administered the oath in his chamber.

Others sworn in include Indian National Congress (INC) members Mabel Rebello (Jharkhand), G. Sanjeeva Reddy (Andhra Pradesh), Pravinchandra Somabhai Rashtrapal (Gujarat); Bhartiya Janata Party members S.S. Ahluwalia (Jharkhand), Vinay Katiyar (Uttar Pradesh), Shree Gopal Vyas (Chhattisgarh); and Communist Party of India (Marxist) members Moinul Hassan Ahamed, Saman Pathak and Tapan Kumar Sen (all from West Bengal).

The two Bahujan Samaj Party members who took the oath were Munkad Ali and Balihari (both from Uttar Pradesh). Janata Dal (United) member Mahendra Prasad (Bihar), Rashtriya Janata Dal member Mahmood Madani (Uttar Pradesh) and Independent member Rajeev Chandrasekhar (Karnataka) were also administered the oath.

While Mr. Khan of the INC (Karnataka), Mr. Bhardwaj (INC, Haryana), Mr. Ahluwalia, Mr. Prasad and Ms. Rebello were re-elected to the House, Mr. Joshi (Shiv Sena, Maharashtra), Mr. Katiyar and others joined the House for the first time.
