NEW DELHI: The Centre has released 40 lakh tonnes of sugar as free sale quota for July to September quarter.

This is five lakh tonnes more than last year's quota for the corresponding period.

In addition to this, one lakh tonnes of free sale sugar would be released as festival quota for September.

For July, the free sale quota released is 12 lakh tonnes and it has to be sold within the month.

The enhanced quota of 40 lakh tonnes is expected to maintain retail price of sugar at a reasonable level. If the prices show any abnormal increasing trend, additional releases would be made.
