Health Minister Anbumani to chair meeting

NEW DELHI: The institute and governing bodies of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) are scheduled to meet on Wednesday.

The issue of removal of AIIMS Director P. Venugopal is likely to come up at the all-powerful institute body meeting, to be chaired by Health and Family Welfare Minister Anbumani Ramadoss, though the official agenda has only academic and administrative issues listed on it.

The two bodies, both chaired by Dr. Ramadoss, are meeting for the first time after the premier institute became a centre of controversy, with the Minister, as its president, and the AIIMS Director indulging in a war of words.

The Resident Doctors Association had threatened to go on a strike if Dr. Venugopal is removed. Its president Binod Patro claimed that the Association had the support of the faculty association, karmachari union, students union, Society of Young Scientists and retired faculty members.
