``We are open to dialogue on issue of standard''

NEW DELHI: The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) has issued conditional acceptance of the Coca Cola offer for talks on the issue of pesticides in carbonated beverages.

"We are open to dialogue on the issue of standard. The company should spell out how they will ensure the standard," director Sunita Narain said.

She said she had written to Atul Singh, president and CEO of the soft drink giant, accepting his proposal to have a meeting on the issue.

"We would like to suggest that the agenda for discussion needs to be on the setting of regulations for carbonated beverages and how your company will ensure that the process moves forward," the letter said.

The CSE demanded that the regulations finalised by the Bureau of Indian Standards must be notified so that the process of validation of the test of methodology could begin.

"We, therefore, welcome the opportunity to discuss how this standard could be notified," it further said.

Mr. Singh had written a letter to the CSE on August 18, rejecting its findings on the soft drink but offered to discuss the issue. UNI
