Silent on the issue of handing over Uttar Pradesh unit to Rahul Gandhi

KANPUR: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday exhorted the people to adopt the Gandhian technique of `do or die' to throw out the Mulayam Singh Government for rebuilding a new Uttar Pradesh.

At a political rally here signalling the launch of the party's campaign for the 2007 Assembly elections Ms. Gandhi pointed out the poor track record of the non-Congress Governments in the State over the last 15 years and said they were incapable of delivering the goods. However, she was silent on the issue of handing over the State's charge to son and Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi, a popular demand of the Congressmen.

Ms. Gandhi charged the State Government with laundering the Central funds for development schemes and dividing the society on caste and religious lines.

Mr. Rahul Gandhi, in an apparent reference to the Mulayam Government's decision to give unemployment dole to the jobless, said after ignoring the youth for several years the Government had suddenly remembered them. But the same youth could turn the tables on the Government.

Ms. Gandhi said the State had become synonymous with caste and communal politics. Criminals and goons were ruling the roost. Without naming Mr. Yadav, she said politicians were only hankering for power and did not care for the common man. "Is this Samajwad (socialism)?"

Blaming the Government for the closure of industrial units here, which rendered hundreds of factory hands jobless, she said the present regime believed in the politics of discrimination.

The quantum of Central funds received by Uttar Pradesh for the programmes launched by the Centre in the last couple of years was the highest ever. Where had all the money gone, she wondered.

On the terrorist activities in the country, Ms. Gandhi said it was wrong to target only one community. The entire country was one against terrorism.

She outlined the measures taken by the Centre for minorities, weavers, farmers and other deprived sections and the steps to control price rise.
