Patna: The by-election for the Fatuah Assembly constituency in Bihar passed off peacefully on Wednesday amid tight security with an estimated 40 per cent turnout.

“The by-poll was peaceful with no untoward incident reported from anywhere. About 40 per cent of an electorate of little over 2.21 lakh exercised their franchise,” State Joint Chief Electoral Officer Kumar Anshumali said.

JD(U) nominee Arun Manjhi and RJD-backed LJP’s Punit Rai, a close relative of party president Ram Vilas Paswan, are locked in a keen contest for the seat. The seat had fallen vacant following the death of JD(U) MLA Saryug Paswan.

Saryug Paswan’s wife Damyanti Devi has entered the fray as a BSP nominee following denial of JD(U) nomination. The Congress has fielded Dwarika Paswan, while Vidyanand of the CPI-ML (Liberation) and an Independent are also in the fray.

The counting of votes will be taken up on May 30, he said. PTI
