There are many ways to protest and fight injustice. Frustrated with the apathy of officials, a 30-year-old woman put her two daughters for “sale” here on Thursday to raise money to “bribe” officials.
Carrying the two girls in baskets tied to a pole flung on her shoulder, Vanishri of Holalkere town arrived at the Deputy Commissioner's office demanding justice. A placard said ‘Makkalu maratakkive' (children are up for sale). Ms. Vanishri, who is from a Scheduled Caste community, lost her husband nearly three years ago and has been living in penury since then.
According to Ms. Vanishri, she had applied for the post of anganwadi worker about a year ago. However, her application was rejected.
Claiming that she had secured 62 per cent in SSLC, she alleged that officials concerned were taking bribe and appointing people who had scored less than her for the post.
“I have been protesting for nearly a year seeking justice. None of the officials has responded to my pleas,” she said.
“Life has become miserable after my husband died. It's really difficult to raise my daughters as I have no source of income.”
She said she applied for the anganwadi worker's post as she “met the eligibility criteria”. She said her application was rejected as she could not bribe officials.
When contacted, Deputy Commissioner Vipul Bansal told The Hindu that it would take some time to look into the issue as Ms. Vanishri's application was submitted a year ago.
“I have directed the Deputy Director of Women and Child Development Department submit me the details of the case within a week,” he said.
Mr. Bansal promised to take action against officials if they were found guilty.
