TIRUCHI: The Union Ministry of Information Technology and Communications has asked the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to fix the minimum tariff for mobile phone service providers.

Minister for Information Technology and Communications A. Raja said here on Saturday that it would benefit the customers to a great extent.

His Ministry was exploring the possibility of introducing number portability, ‘Y-max’ and ‘3G’ technology to benefit customers. Number portability had already been introduced in metros such as Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata and New Delhi.

Against the total available capacity of 100 MHz, about 35 MHz had been utilised by the mobile phone service providers and 250 million connections had been provided.

The Ministry was exploring the possibility of enhancing its capacity utilisation.

Pointing out that the Ministry would resist monopoly in communication technology, he said a plan to open the doors for more competitors was under active consideration.
