Ukhrul (Manipur): An Army Major and two Assam Rifles (AR) personnel were killed and seven injured in an ambush by Manipur insurgents on an AR patrol party here, an interior hill district bordering Myanmar, on Wednesday, official sources said.

The insurgents exploded grenades, detonated an Improvised Explosive Device and opened fire at the security men in Sorbung at 8.40 a.m.

The security personnel retaliated and three men were killed and the fighting that ensued lasted for nearly an hour, the sources said adding the name of the Major, who was commanding the AR patrol party was yet to be known.

Police forces have rushed to the spot and have launched a search to track the militants, they said, adding that the seven seriously injured men have been rushed to a nearby hospital.

Though the identity of the insurgents was not known, the police suspected the hand of the banned United National Liberation Front. — PTI
