Polio to be eradicated by 2008: Ramadoss

NEW DELHI: Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Anbumani Ramadoss said on Saturday that India was fully committed to the eradication of polio and the target was to achieve zero transmission by 2008.

Addressing the Rotarians at the National Polio Plus Orientation and Planning Meet, after accepting the ‘Polio Eradication Champion Award’ here, Dr. Ramadoss said the government would take all possible measures, notwithstanding the cost, to eradicate the disease.

The government has allotted more than Rs. 1,300 crore for the Pulse Polio programme and more than 80 per cent of the programme expenditure was met from the domestic budget, he said. Deepak Kapur, Chairman, Indian National Polio Plus Committee, Rotary International; Robert S. Scott, Chairman, the Rotary Foundation and Polio Plus Committee, Rotary International; and other leaders from the Rotary were present.
