New Delhi: Backing reservation for OBC Muslims in education and jobs, NCP leader and Union Minister Sharad Pawar on Saturday said the demand for quota was based not on religion but on economic factors.

Addressing a conference of the All-India Muslim OBC Organisation here, he drew attention to the menial jobs many people from the community were doing, he said they were backward by profession and not by caste or community.

Citing the Sachar Committee report on the status of Muslims in India, he said only a small number of them had basic education. — PTI
