Jaipur: The Rajasthan police prevented about 25 child marriages from taking place including two in Jaipur's Golyavas village, seven in Pali, and 12 in Bundi on the occasion of Akha Teej on Thursday. The police took action on public complaints and served magisterial notices, official sources said here.
While the parents denied that they were marrying off their children, unofficial reports said that despite inclement weather, scores of child marriages were held in parts of the State.
Two dozen marriages were reported in villages of Dausa and Jaipur districts covering Beri, Hasiyawas, Balla-ka-naganl, Bhuri Bhandaj, Rawat-ki-dhani, Mundali, Kujota, Torda, Bansur, Gopalpur and Kalera.
The Government said it had directed the administration to prevent child marriages. All District Collectors and Superintendents of Police had been ordered to stop them, an official spokesman said. Non-governmental organisations also campaigned against child marriages. PTI
