Emotional outburst at farewell function
Ahmedabad: A day after he tendered his resignation as Gujarat High Court judge, B.J. Sethna on Wednesday broke down and questioned the Supreme Court decision to transfer him to the Sikkim High Court.
The apex court action came after Mr. Justice Sethna was involved in a scuffle with a senior colleague Justice P.B. Majumdar in January. Mr. Justice Majumdar has since been shifted to the Rajasthan High Court. At a farewell function organised by the High Court Bar Association here on Wednesday, Mr. Justice Sethna said: "You order a transfer because you have power to do so, I had not expected this from the Supreme Court." He questioned why his demand for an inquiry into the unprecedented incident by the apex court was not met. "They said I was transferred in the public interest. Thousands of cases are pending in the Gujarat High Court. I have helped a lot to clear thousands of cases. However, in the Sikkim High Court only 50 cases are pending. What public interest will it serve?"
He said he was a workaholic and his conscience hurt him to take a salary of Rs. 50,000 for serving in the Sikkim High Court. "I decided to resign, instead of going to Sikkim," he said. PTI
