"It will do much better than expected in the U.P. polls"

  • It is up to Sonia to decide on brainstorming session
  • Rahul to begin roadshow in Bundelkhand today

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Arjun Singh on Sunday said his "gut feeling" was that his party would do "much better" in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls than people's expectations. "Though I have not gone there, my gut feeling is that the party will do much better than people expect it to do," Mr. Singh told PTI.

Mr. Singh, who is also the Union Human Resource Development Minister, said that while nothing had changed in the politically crucial State, the people there would have to decide whether they were getting what the Constitution meant to provide for them or they wanted "the kind of rule they have today." Mr. Singh had said already that the Centre would take all Constitutional measures to get the Supreme Court stay on the OBC quota in elite educational institutions vacated. He had also made it clear that the Government did not want any confrontation with the Supreme Court.

"All this is the decision of the leader," Mr. Singh said, asked whether he favoured the holding of a brainstorming session of senior leaders such as those held in Pachmarhi in 1998 and Shimla in 2003 to generate fresh ideas about the way ahead in the wake of the party's latest debacle in Punjab and Uttarakhand. "All this is the decision of the leader. No one needs to advise Congress president Sonia Gandhi. If she feels necessary, she will have it."

On whether Rahul Gandhi's roadshow meant that he would be more active in the days to come, Mr. Singh said he had already been active. PTI
