"An attack on leaders of all parties"

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday criticised the "feudal mentality" demonstrated by Rahul Gandhi, MP and son of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, when he virtually stated in Uttar Pradesh that only a member of the Gandhi family was fit to rule. Party leader Sushma Swaraj said she would not blame his statement on "immaturity," but his remarks were an attack on leaders of all political parties as well as all leaders of the Congress leaders who were not members of the Nehru-Gandhi family.

Ms. Swaraj was referring to Mr. Rahul Gandhi's his statement that had a member of the Gandhi family been Prime Minister in 1992 the Babri Masjid would not have been pulled down. "Tomorrow when Manmohan Singh is no longer the Prime Minister, he could as well say that had a member of the Gandhi family been Prime Minister there would have been no inflation and no Nandigram."

Leader of the Opposition L.K. Advani said the Liberhans Commission, probing the demolition of the Babri Masjid, should "take note" of Mr. Gandhi's statement which, he said, virtually blamed the former Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao for the demolition.

"Insult to Hindus"

Earlier, BJP leader Vijay Kumar Malhotra described Mr. Gandhi's remarks as "an insult to Hindu sentiments." It was shocking that "this young man can stoop so low to please Muslims."

This demonstrated that the Gandhi family was opposed to the building of a Ram temple at the disputed site.

The remarks were also insulting to the memory of his father Rajiv Gandhi, "who had allowed Hindus to worship the Ram idol [placed inside the structure]," said Mr. Malhotra.
