Sonia Gandhi being misled by sycophants, says Obaidullah Khan Azmi

  • Obaidullah Khan Azmi, Mulayam Singh were in Janata Dal together
  • Former Congress leader Ansari joins Samajwadi Party

LUCKNOW: Obaidullah Khan Azmi, Congress Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, will campaign for the Samajwadi Party in the coming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

This was announced by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh at a press conference on Tuesday.

Stating that they were together in the Janata Dal, Mr. Singh said Mr. Azmi had agreed to campaign for the party when all the political parties and leaders had turned against his party and his Government.

Unfazed at the prospect of setting a new precedent in politics, Mr. Azmi justified his decision and said Congress president Sonia Gandhi was being misled by some self-seekers and sycophants in the party. He said some senior leaders were trying to weaken the Congress from within. Considered a powerful orator, Mr. Azmi said he will not resign from the Congress and will address election rallies for the Samajwadi Party.

Mr. Azmi described Mr. Mulayam Singh as the champion of secularism and said the Congress posed the biggest challenge to secularism in the State. Instead of fighting the communal forces, it was destroying secularism by targeting Mr. Singh. Mr. Azmi said this had resulted in the communal forces gaining ground. Only Amethi and Rae Bareli figured in the Congress plans, which is why a huge amount of Central funds have been allocated to the twin constituencies, he charged.

Accusing the Congress leadership of ignoring him, Mr. Azmi said the leadership did not pay any heed to his suggestions on vital issues.

In another development, Congress leader and former MLA Buniyad Hussain Ansari joined the Samajwadi Party. He was inducted by the Chief Minister.

Later, addressing the supporters of Mr. Ansari, Mr. Singh said the party was passing through a difficult phase as his political opponents had pulled out all stops to prevent the party from returning to power.

He accused the Congress of plotting to dislodge his Government.

Samajwadi Party's national general secretary Amar Singh denied that the Supreme Court had rejected the review petition filed by the party in the disproportionate assets case.

Mr. Singh told newsmen that a clarification petition had been filed in the court, adding that the apex court ruled that since there is no scope for clarification in the verdict a review petition could be filed.

He said this would be done soon after seeking legal advice.
