NEW DELHI: "The Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal award is equal to a Supreme Court order and it should be respected by the States concerned," Union Water Resources Minister Saifuddin Soz said.
Speaking to The Hindu , Mr. Soz, however, said there were provisions for relief for any State that felt aggrieved. Any of the States involved could raise a point of difference with the tribunal within three months. "This is their right. These three months are crucial," he said.
According to the Minister, "two situations" were different in the final award. One, the tribunal had explained in detail the manner and quantum of monthly water releases. Second, it had suggested the setting up of a regulatory authority for organising the releases and explained the constitution of such a body. "This mechanism is workable."
