SRINAGAR: Defying a boycott call, Shabnam Lone, daughter of slain Hurriyat Conference leader Abdul Gani Lone, on Monday filed nomination papers for the coming Assembly election from Kupwara.

Soon after filing her papers, Ms. Lone, a Supreme Court lawyer, said contesting the polls was not her choice but of hundreds of her father’s followers and the people of her constituency.

Elections, she added, were no solution to the Kashmir issue, which could be resolved only by tripartite talks.

On the decision of her brothers Sajjad Gani Lone and Bilal Gani Lone to start an anti-poll campaign, Ms. Lone said: “They are right in their own way and this is their personal decision. However, I’m right in my own way and my way is different from theirs.”

Ms. Lone said she would fight a battle of rights and become the voice of helpless.

The Janata Dal (Secular) has decided to field six candidates in the Assembly elections slated from November 17.

JD(S) spokesman Danish Ali said his party would field candidates from Basohli, Darhal, Anantnag, Surankot, Rajpora and Uri constituencies.
