Kolkata: Vigil was stepped up along West Bengal’s border with Assam following the serial blasts in that State on Thursday. Additional security forces have been rushed there to assist in combing operations to track down those responsible for the blasts attempting to flee Assam through its border with north Bengal.

An alert has been sounded across West Bengal and security has been tightened here in the city too.

The State government reviewed security arrangements, particularly in the border districts where check-posts have been set up, State’s Home Secretary Ashok Mohan Chakavarty said.

Certain pockets of north Bengal have long been considered sensitive areas where various militant outfits have had a presence. Activists of such groups are also suspected to have links with militants both in Assam and in Bangladesh.

“A special alert has been sounded in the region. Vehicles passing through the border with Assam are being checked,” a senior State police official said. Surveillance has also been considerably tightened in West Bengal’s borders with Nepal, Bangladesh and Bhutan.
