Kolkata: Senior Congress leader and former mayor of the city municipal corporation, Subrata Mukherjee, surprised many when he appeared on the podium by the side of Trinamool Congress chief, Mamata Banerjee, at a rally called by her at Singur.

His presence there did not have the approval of the leadership of his party that will be discussing his action at a later date.

Though Mr. Mukherjee did not speak of returning to the Trinamool Congress to which he belonged when he was the mayor of the city’s civic body he admitted that his presence at the rally did not have his party’s sanction.

‘May lose position’

“I may lose my position in the Pradesh Congress Committee; my political career there may be doomed,” he said.

Also there on the podium was Somen Mitra, a former president of the State unit of the Congress who had left the party some time ago to form a party of his own and ally with Ms. Banerjee in the Trinamool Congress-led agitation demanding the handing back of land to farmers from whom it had allegedly been forcibly acquired for setting up the Tata Motors project at Singur.
