Cheruthoni (Kerala): CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat has said the fate that befell the Narasimha Rao regime awaits the Manmohan Singh government too.

The artificial majority created in Parliament last month was being exposed and at least nine parties now backed the Left’s action in withdrawing support to the United Progressive Alliance government at the Centre, Mr. Karat told a public meeting held in connection with the inauguration of the Idukki district committee office here on Friday.

The only difference between the Rao and Manmohan governments was the quantum of bribe money involved in saving them. While under the Narasimha Rao government the amount given to MPs was in lakhs, it was in crores under the present government, he alleged.

Mr. Karat charged the Congress-led government with following the U.S. policy initiated by the BJP-led regime. “A third force will come soon to keep both the Congress and the BJP out of power.” The people would punish the Congress in the next Lok Sabha elections for its misdeeds.

“We told the people why the Union Government failed in arresting price rise.” In the coming days, it would become a national movement against the wrong policies of the Centre.
