CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has congratulated Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the United Progressive Alliance government winning the confidence vote in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.
Mr. Karunanidhi is travelling to New Delhi on Wednesday to convey his congratulations and hold discussions on the immediate concerns of the State.
He said he was happy with the victory. He described the win as a product of the schemes implemented for the people. He never doubted the outcome of the trust vote. A day before the vote he had said, “They will win.”
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagan leader was in constant touch with party leaders in New Delhi on Tuesday. He had no doubts even when the party leaders did not seem very confident. He infused confidence in them, saying the UPA would prevail.
Magnificent: PMK chief
Calling it a magnificent victory, Pattali Makkal Katchi leader S. Ramadoss said the verdict had given the recognition of the Lok Sabha and the country to the UPA government’s policies and programmes.
“The nation is in safe hands. We will stand by the Prime Minister,” he added.
Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagan general secretary Vaiko said the UPA government won the trust vote through “unethical means.” Its credibility had gone down before the eyes of people, he alleged.
Mr. Vaiko said that while Dr. Singh denied any horse- trading, JMM leader Shibu Soren said he was offered the Coal Ministry in return for support.
