LUCKNOW: A B.Tech. final year student of IIT-Kanpur committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling of her hostel room on Friday night.

Toya Chatterjee, 22, had failed to pass the final year examination, and this is believed to have led her to take the extreme step.

Toya’s death cast a gloom over the convocation ceremony of the institute on Saturday. In fact, her father, Kunal Chatterjee, had reached Kanpur from Kolkata on Friday to attend the convocation.

They had dinner together on Friday, and even then Toya did not disclose her failure to Mr. Chatterjee, police said.

A suicide note in Bangla language addressed to her father said she did not have the courage to disclose her failure to him and appealed to him to take care of her mother.
