CHANDIGARH: Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said on Saturday that the process for setting up a Defence University in the State was in the final stages.

Speaking at a function to mark the golden jubilee year of Sirsa Education Society in Sirsa, Mr. Hooda disclosed that a medical university would also be set up in the State.

Inaugurating the senior block of Dheeramal Arora College of Education and CMK National Girls’ Post Graduate College, he said that keeping in view the importance of education in this era of globalisation, his regime had declared the year 2008 as Education Year and Rs. 3,139 crore would be spent during the year on educational facilities. He said the prime focus was on girls’ education and it was for the first time in the country that a Kanya Gurukul — at Khanpur Kalan village in Sonepat district — had been given the status of a Women’s University.

Mr. Hooda said the Rajiv Gandhi Education City that was now being set up would have modern educational facilities.

Meanwhile, he announced compensation of Rs. 19.64 crore at the rate of Rs. 2,000 a acre to the farmers of Siwani tehsil in Bhiwani district for the loss of their kharif crops in 2007 due to a drought-like situation.
