KOLKATA: The Trinamool Congress leadership announced here on Thursday a tie-up with a Left party — the Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) — for a united movement against the West Bengal government and the Centre’s “anti-people” policies.

The two parties will jointly fight the rural polls in the State that are likely to be held in May.

“Though the Trinamool Congress believes in Gandhian principles and ideals it is not, at the same time, against Marxism and the Left ideology,” party chief Ms. Mamata Banerjee said.

On the alliance with the SUCI, she said it was a “new political platform to fight the Communist Party of India (Marxist) which has turned pro-capitalist.”

The Trinamool Congress- SUCI alliance would maintain equidistance from both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party, Ms. Banerjee said.

This was critical to his party’s understanding with the Trinamool Congress, State secretary of the SUCI Pravash Ghosh said.
