Terms media report on this a "figment of the imagination"

SRINAGAR: Amid police claims that the recently arrested municipal councillor from Zakura was involved in a conspiracy to assassinate former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, his daughter and People's Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti is in controversy over the issue.

Councillor Abdul Waheed Dar was arrested by Srinagar police along with three others and all of them allegedly confessed involvement.

However, before the arrest Abdul Waheed Dar had reportedly gone to Delhi and met Ms. Mufti. A media report said he was `given shelter' in her Delhi house. Ms. Mufti refuted the charge and said "the report is just a figment of the imagination."

"This is rubbish. He never stayed in my house but certainly met me on January 10 and told me that the police were looking for him," Ms. Mufti told The Hindu here. "I spoke to the SSP Srinagar and sought details and soon asked him to leave."

The PDP president said that in the past there had been a number of attacks on her and Mr. Sayeed. "We have never compromised in matters relating to law and order and militancy. We believe the law must take its course, including in this case."

SSP Srinagar Munir Khan confirmed that Dar was in Delhi on January 10 and returned the same day to Srinagar.

"No, he did not stay in Delhi at all," he said, adding that "it is a fact that Mehboobaji spoke to me and inquired about the case. I told her that he was involved and she did not say anything beyond that."
