An all-terrain vehicle and an elevated toy train are among the new facilities planned at Thenmala ecotourism, at a cost of Rs.3 crore.

All-terrain vehicles (ATVs), also known as quad bike or off-road vehicle, will be launched in the adventure zone, which already has nine mountain cycles plying on renovated tracks. A mix of a mini car and a motorcycle, the rugged vehicle can handle the rough terrain in the adventure zone. It is bound to attrack youngsters in a big way to the destination that witnessed a turnout of 1.5 lakh visitors during the last calendar year.

The elevated toy train, which will resemble a monorail, will have five cars. It will come up in the leisure zone at a cost of Rs.45 lakh and will give passengers a bird’s-eye view of the surroundings.

Water ambulance

The Thenmala Ecotourism Promotion Society (TEPS) plans to resume boating in the adjacent Thenmala reservoir by procuring two boats which can accommodate 24 people each.

A water ambulance to respond to emergencies in the reservoir will be introduced as part of the Rs.1 crore earmarked for purchasing the boats. A natural play pool will be set up in the leisure zone facing the Kallada river. Zorbing (water play ball) and wall-climbing are the other facilities planned.

Official sources told The Hindu that tender formalities for the facilities had been completed and that they would be set up within a year.

To encourage eco-tourists to stay overnight, the TEPS would set up 10 tented accommodations near the dam junction. Dormitories would also be constructed and Costford had been entrusted with the work.

The TEPS had upgraded the musical dancing fountain by adding waterfront huts, and signages. A major portion of the elevated walkway had been replaced with steel to withstand the rain and sun.
