They demand release of two persons held in a case

The detention of two tribal persons suspected in connection with damage of an agricultural pumpset triggered protest at Jeelugumilli in the agency of West Godavari on Sunday.

A large gathering of Adivasis staged a demonstration at the Jeelugumilli police station under the aegis of the Adivasi Sena and the AP Vyavasaya Vrithidarula Sangham demanding release of the arrested persons.

According to information, the police picked up two tribal persons from Madakavarigudem in connection with the damage of an agricultural pumpset belonging to a non-tribal farmer K. Durga Rao from Darbhagudem. Two of the accused were let off after questioning on Saturday and the remaining accused Madakam Chiranjeevi and Ch. Ramesh were still in custody in Jangareddygudem. The protesters alleged that the accused were subjected to torture in police custody.

Babji of AP Vyavasaya Vrithidarula Sangham accused the police of harassing tribals at the behest of non-tribals.
