Officials of the Air Intelligence Unit at the Chennai airport seized 800 silver coins and 15,120 memory cards, which were kept hidden in a bag inside the gents wash room at the airport on Wednesday.

An official release said that the Airports Authority personnel alerted the Customs officials about the bag in the wash room.

When the bag was examined it was found to contain five packets wrapped with adhesive tapes and newspaper.

The 800 coins belonging to the pre-independence era, were examined by an expert who certified that the coins as silver and valued at Rs.4.37 lakh. The memory cards were valued at Rs.34 lakh.

The coins and memory cards did not accompany any valid documents. Hence they were seized under the Customs Act of 1962.
